A Link With America In the last issue of New Horizons we discussed the recognition of mercantile marine veterans in the USA, with the introduction of a Congressional Gold Medal for WWII veterans.
We are in contact with our counterparts in the American Mercantile Marine who have forwarded to us an article taken from a recent edition of the Virginian Pilot.....
A month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, German U-boats descended en-masse on the East Coast of America. ln the first four months of 1942, German submarines sank 173 ships off the East Coast. The Germans plan was to sink as many ships as possible before they could be relaced thereby cuttin off supplies to the UK.
The sacrifice and heroism of the US Mercantile Marine during this time was scarcely acknowledged until 1988, when the US government agreed to grant veterans’ benefits to those who had served during WWII.
